THE HIDDEN SIGNS OF DEPRESSION

Depression has increasingly entered our collective awareness, and more people are talking about it openly. But beyond the more recognized signs, there are subtler experiences that often go unnoticed.

One of these is persistent fatigue—tiredness that isn’t fully explained by overwork or lack of rest. Even simple tasks can begin to feel too much, and concentration may suffer. While burnout is often linked to overwork or unpredictable demands that impact rest and reset, it can also evolve into something deeper, including depression.

Another overlooked sign is an increase in self-criticism. Instead of offering themselves understanding or grace, individuals may become more judgmental toward their own struggles. What might be framed as “tough love” often ends up depleting already limited emotional energy, reinforcing depressive patterns rather than easing them.

Finally, there’s the tendency to withdraw into passive forms of coping, such as binging shows, scrolling on social media, or playing video games. While these can offer temporary distraction, they can also lead to increased isolation. Over time, one might begin choosing screens over basic activities like going out, connecting with others, or even running errands. Human connection, though sometimes uncomfortable, plays a key role in shaping meaning into our lives and help us understand our values. These interactions with others provide us with a sense of self and can be antidote to depression.
